Gutters are a system of troughs and downspouts attached to the roofline of a building. Their primary purpose is to collect and redirect rainwater away from the structure to prevent water damage.

Gutters are essential because they protect your home’s foundation, prevent water damage to walls, and landscaping, and help maintain the structural integrity of the building.

Common gutter materials include aluminum, steel, vinyl, copper, and zinc. The choice of material depends on factors like durability, budget, and aesthetics. In the Houston area, the most common material is Aluminum

It’s recommended to clean your gutters at least twice a year – typically in the spring and fall. However, the frequency may vary depending on your location and the presence of nearby trees.

Gutter guards are protective systems designed to keep debris out while allowing water to flow through. They reduce the need for frequent cleaning, and keep water debris from building up causing water to overflow and other costly damages.

The lifespan of residential gutters depends greatly on the quality of installation, weather conditions, routine maintenance, and if they have gutter guards. The National Association of Home Builders suggests that galvanized steel or aluminum gutters should have a 20-year average life and copper gutters have a 50-year average life.

Gutters should be pitched slightly from one end to the other, even if they appear level from a distance. Every 40 feet, gutters should slope an inch or two. However, gutters must be completely level from front to back, or water will spill over either edge.
